History

The "Jagtap Art Studio" was established in the year 1935 by Mr. Krishnaji Genuji Jagtap. Before setting up his own studio, he had worked for renowned sculptors like Mr. Karmarkar, Mr. Mhatre, and Mr. Talim. Afterwards he set out on his own and started a new studio in Pune. He has many well-known works to his credit, including the 6 feet high sculpture of Mahatma Ghandhi carved out of marble which stands proudly till date in phaltan. He has also made sculptures of Mr. Jotiba Phule, Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Umaji Naik etc. The bronze bust of Tanaji Malusare perched proudly atop Sinhagad, The 6 feet high bronze statue at Bhosari, The two majestic Lion's lording over Sarasbag are the other examples of some of this outstanding works, to name just a few. He has a large numbers of works to his credit in Maharashtra.

Afterwards his son, Mr. Madhusudan Jagtap carried forward his legacy and created sculptures like the ones sprinkled across the sprawling N.D.A. campus near Khadakwasla, Pune. He learnt the finer points of the art under his father expert tutelage. He had started working alongside his father since 1970. He made a name for himself by creating works of art like, Mr. Mamasaheb Dandekaras statue in S.P. college, a 4.5 feet high sculpture of Shri. Akkalkot Swami in the sitting position etc. He also created a majestic 10 feet high statue of the Varaha (Vishnu Avatar) for the Udupi Math, Karnataka; which weight a full 1.5 ton. His bronze works can be found at such distant places as Solapur, Dhule, Pune, Paranda, Karjat etc. Along with these works he also captured the splendor of various Hindu Deities in the luminous white marble statues. He has also given a new lease of the life to old, damaged statues by working on them again using certain chemicals.

Now, continuing this illustrious lineage into the third generation is Mr. Krishanaji Jagtaps grandson Mr. Amit Jagtap, who has proved to be a chip of the old block. He has been working since 1995 and has supplemented his skills with a G. D. Arts(Painting) diploma, from the Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya in Pune. He already has 60 busts and 24 full-size bronze statues to his credit. These include 4 statues in N.D.A., The Vishweshwar statue in the engineering college, Shri K. Chirmules bust present in the United Western Bank, the bust of the fathe of well known Pune city builder, Kumar builder, the busts of Mr. & Mrs. Basin at Wanawadi and the bust of Air India chief engineer Mr. Bhaskaran. He has also created statue near Bijapur. Along with these he also has made some realistic sculpture, paintings, murals etc. He aspires to carry forward the work started by his grandfather and supplemented by his father, in the near future.
